The Player's Corner

Veronica Loewy
Violinist

I was born and educated in Budapest, Hungary. At Elementary school, music was taught daily through the Kodaly Method. I remember being fascinated with my father's violin; he was an amateur violinist who did not survive the Holocaust. During that period of time, my mother had to sell or exchange many of our possessions for food; but she held onto his violin.

I began my formal violin training at the age of six at the Goldmark Music School.  This is where Pal Kadosa taught music. After 10 years of studying music, however, I pursued other interests and I eventually became a pharmacist.
In 1971 I came to the USA with my family because we wanted to enjoy freedom. I prioritized my time by first establishing our existence in our new country and then my career as a pharmacist. I nevertheless found time to assist with several musical projects at my Hungarian social club and ultimately at Carnegie Hall for the 50th anniversary celebration of the Hungarian Revolution.
Music again became a focus in my life.  After many hours of practicing and with the help of a music teacher and with the encouragement of my friends, I again felt confident enough to play at small gatherings.
Three years ago I took part in a concert with the Shelter Rock Road Orchestra there I met Mark Flanzraich, an oboe player ; he invited me to join the Orchestra and I have been a member ever since. I enjoy our weekly rehearsals and our various concerts but
most importantly once again feel inspired to play my father's original violin.
